How to Save More than $400 on Your Summer Vacation

A family of four from Northwest Georgia has decided to head to Jekyll Island for their summer vacation. They have decided that they want to take their time as they travel and make some fun stops along the way.

The day before they are set to leave, Mom stops by the local Farm Bureau office to pay the insurance on their Ford Explorer prior to their departure.  While there, she again thanks her agent for having told her about the $500 bonus cash for which she was eligible on the Explorer she recently bought, just for being a Farm Bureau member.  The agent hands her a Benefits of Membership booklet and begins to tell her about all the other great benefits that she and her family have access to through their membership.

Her next stop after the insurance office was to get an oil change and tire rotation prior to their trip. She noticed in the booklet that Farm Bureau members receive a 15% discount at Jiffy Lube, so she heads there to have the services performed.  Her total cost was $75, but with her Farm Bureau discount, she saved $11.25.

The next morning, the family loads up the Explorer and starts heading south on I-75 toward Atlanta. Daughter is thumbing through the benefits booklet and notices that Farm Bureau members receive a discount at Six Flags Over Georgia.  Having never been there, the family purchases tickets on their iPad in advance, saving them $27 off the gate price on each ticket for a total savings of $108 for their family of four.

Exhausted from their day at the Park, they decide to get a hotel room nearby at the Comfort Inn & Suites in Lithia Springs.  They reserved a 2-Queen Suite which is normally $115/night, but with their 20% Farm Bureau discount, they paid $92 – resulting in total savings of $23 for the night.

It was raining the next day, so they decided to spend another day in Atlanta and head to the Georgia Aquarium.  They again purchased their advance tickets online, and saved $9 on the two adult tickets and $7 on the two children’s tickets.  Their total savings off gate admission was $32.  Due to the rain, they decided to stay another night at the Comfort Suites – saving another $23 for the additional night.

The next day was beautiful and sunny, so the family decided to head down to Jekyll Island.  Since they saved $46 for two nights in Atlanta, they tried to find another Choice Hotels property on the island.  Using the Choice Hotels app and entering their Farm Bureau special rate code, they found a Quality Inn & Suites – priced at $184/night. With their Farm Bureau discount, they will save $36.80 per night for the three nights they’re staying, for a total savings of $110.40.

As they approach Jekyll Island, Son was now thumbing through the Benefits of Membershipbrochure and discovered that Farm Bureau has a “Savings Plus” app and he downloads it onto his iPhone.  As he looks through the discounts available on Jekyll Island, he spots a deal at the Driftwood Bistro.  Always hungry, he convinces the family to stop and eat where they saved $54 on their $90 meal using the deal (purchase $15 gift card for $6) available on the Farm Bureau Savings Plus app.

After four days of sun and sand, the family was ready to head back to Northwest Georgia.  As they came back through Atlanta, they decided to stop at Stone Mountain for the laser light show, which has always been a family favorite!  They enjoyed the show even more than usual, knowing that they had saved $10 on each ticket, for total savings of $40.

As they pulled back into the driveway at home, Dad calculates their total savings using their Farm Bureau membership.  “We saved $401.65 during our vacation, just by being a Farm Bureau member!”  Mom added, “That’s in addition to the $500 we saved on our car!  And the best thing about it, is that we’re supporting Georgia’s farmers through our membership.  Let’s go tell the neighbors about our trip and tell them that they need to be Farm Bureau members too!”
